Hidden Lyon – courtyards

The tourist brochures will tell you that Vieux Lyon is laced with secret passages and courtyards. All you have to do is push a door to find your way into these private spaces. The reality was a little patchier than this, but we still found some amazing spaces.
So many choices

We arrived in Lyon in nice time to freshen up a little before heading out for a feed. Just 50 metres from our front door was tourist central – bars, cafés, restaurants. We chose one which had been recommended by the owners of the apartment, however, they seemed to have different standards to us, and our first meal in Lyon was an unfortunate disappointment. Wasn’t downright bad, but you can certainly do better than Le Bistrot de Lyon.
The last canal

Milan used to have canals too! There’s still one, and it’s rather beautiful. Cobbles, tram lines, restaurants etc. Quite the spot.

Bellagio was full of charming little laneways. Perhaps a little bit too neat and tidy to be truly interesting.
One of the finer moments

This simple dish of spaghetti at Bellagio was a stand out amongst many stand outs. I’m sure it’s one of George Clooney’s faves!
A very low BMI

Incredible lightness of marble

I learned the attributes of the gothic style in school, and the Duomo is Gothic in its heyday. Even so, I was not prepared for just how fine and intricate the marble was. It just seemed impossible. Stunning.
Now for some shopping

A smorgasboard of brand names at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It’s certainly got a bit more character than Melbourne Central!
